"Fake" or Misleading job postings have always been around - however now that unemployment is around 10% in most places in California (or higher) that means lots of people are looking for a job. Whenever you have a large amount of the population doing anything - there will always be 'scammers' trying to profit. In the past - scammers tended to stay away from unemployed people because they 'didn't have much money.' However, now that people are very desperate to find a job - you find people trying just about anything to find one.

Typically most scams start with you giving up some information before you even see any jobs. Even worse, we have seen scams where people charge you to find a job for you. The problem is, they aren't going to give you any information you couldn't already find elsewhere - as there is no 'secret' bank of jobs that employers go to post openings. All legitimate companies post jobs on popular job sites like SnagAJob, Job.com, Indeed and others - because they work.

Don't confuse a 'fake' job with one that just gets tons of applicants. There are many companies that put legitimate jobs on the internet and get 1,000's to apply for 1 job. They will interview a portion of those applicants - only to hire 1 person. Many people are getting interviews, only to not hear anything back. That is a sign of the times - when employers are getting applicants very easily - they don't have to treat them very well because they know more will line up and apply after them. Don't let this discourage you to apply for more positions!!! You have to apply & interview to get a job - so keep doing that. One suggestion would be to send a 'follow up' card or letter to the person who interviewed you - and include your contact information once again. Let them know you enjoyed meeting with them - and this will help you stand out if you haven't heard from them.
